How to tell if your local SEO strategies are working

Any business can benefit by optimising their website for search, especially when it comes to focusing on local search optimisation methods. Increasingly, small businesses are learning about local SEO and taking steps to make improvements.

Whether it is working on your link building or focusing on content creation, there are plenty of local SEO strategies that can help you improve your place amongst Google’s results page.

The question is: How do you know if your local SEO efforts are working?

Google Analytics website traffic

One of the best tools you have as a business owner is Google Analytics. This free tool gives you a variety of insights into your website that you cannot find anywhere else.

That includes how much of your website traffic comes from organic (non-paid) search. That means, what portion of the people visiting your site are coming from Google’s search results?

Even if this figure starts low, seeing any kind of improvement or growth means that your SEO strategies are having a positive effect.

An increase in conversions

An increase in conversions is a good sign that your search strategies are working.

Conversions could be anything from website visitors downloading an ebook to requesting a quote or simply making a purchase.

Keep in mind, if you are seeing an increase in requests for quotes but not an increase in resulting sales, that might mean your SEO is working well, but you need to improve your quotes in some way to get the sale across the line.

Your website ranking

A very quick test of the effectiveness of your local SEO is to look at how your website is ranking.

Keep in mind, you cannot simply go to Google and type in your keywords and see where your website ranks. This does not work because Google will alter the results knowing that you have spent a lot of time on your website, so you need to use a tool that can give you an unbiased view of your search engine results page (SERP) ranking.

There are plenty of these tools online, such as SEMrush which you can check out with a free trial, or the dedicated WhatsMySERP.

Also, remember that it will typically take months for your organic SEO strategies to start having an effect, so you will need to wait some time before you might see a change in your ranking.

Google Analytics bounce rate and time on site

Another of Google Analytics’ free tools include seeing a measurement of how much time your website visitors spend on your website. Even if they do not make a purchase, spending more time on your site is a good sign.

On the other hand, clicking into your site, then immediately clicking away again is a bad sign. This is known as a bounce rate – imagine your visitors ‘bouncing’ into your website and quickly out again – and you should always aim to keep it low.

A high bounce rate can suggest that the content on your website is not what the visitor expected. This could include the actual information not being helpful, the layout making it hard for them to find what they want, or even annoying pop-ups that frustrate them and make them leave immediately.

So if your bounce rate drops and your time on site improves according to Google Analytics, this is another sign that your local SEO strategies are working.
