5 email marketing tips for tradies

Email marketing for tradies

Email marketing is a big part of digital marketing. It is where you encourage your customers and potential customers to sign up to your newsletter, then send occasional emails their way.

Email marketing is a highly affordable type of marketing with an expected $36 return for every $1 spent, making it an excellent option for small businesses on tight budgets.

It will not contribute to your Google local ranking, but it can help to keep your business front of mind for potential customers, build relationships, and increase your projects with them.

So how can you build an email marketing database, and make the most of it? Try these five tips.

  1. Always offer something useful

Nobody likes spam, and if it’s not useful to your customers, it is probably going to be deleted immediately.

Therefore, your emails should always offer something useful or beneficial to them. That could be anything from a guide on how to restain their deck, to signs to look for that their pipes need replacing or repair, to information around what they can and cannot do as per your local council laws in terms of DIY.

Sharing your insider knowledge will show that you know what you are talking about, and that you are there to help them with their home and properties, rather than just trying to constantly make a sale.

  1. Give them a reason to click

The two major metrics when judging the success of your email marketing are; how many people open the email, and how many people click on a link in your email through to your website.

In both cases, aim to give them a reason to click.

This could be an offer of a discount on services, a free upgrade or an

extra perk when they book a service (for example, a landscaper could offer free garden mulch with every garden design), or the promise of information you know your customers would be interested in.

  1. Invest in email marketing software

Email marketing software can make your life a lot easier when it comes to creating and sending emails. They come at a cost, but offer a range of handy features for time-poor tradies, such as:

• Automated emails (ie follow-up emails asking for an online review after you’ve completed a project)
• Pre-made templates for attractive designs
• Suggested subject lines
• Reports on email opens and click through rates
• Personalisation of your database so you can segment your audience

  1. Pick your timing

Most people tend to check their emails many times throughout the day, but there is something of an art to finding the right time to send your email communications.

In Australia, the highest open rates for emails occur at around 10am to 11am. You can imagine many people taking a mid-morning break at work to check up on their emails, which is why that’s a great time to plan to send out your marketing messages.

As well as the time of day, consider the time of year. For example, a painter might know that many people opt to spruce up their homes in spring, so might send an email late in winter with a special offer for a springtime fresh coat.

  1. Keep building your database

If you are going to the trouble of creating and sending email newsletters, you should also aim to continue building your database to give yourself a larger audience.

You can do this by:

• Adding an option to sign up for newsletters in your regular email signature
• Occasionally sharing your newsletter sign-up form on social media
• Adding an option to sign up with each quote you provide
• Suggesting signing up to happy customers
